Almost died the other day: Steering extension help needed

Featured Replies

So i had one made for my 6 inch lifted BRAT but I think I had ADF make it too long and it was super jumpy and finally stripped out while I was driving down the road the other day. Does anyone have one laying around I could buy or could someone help me determine the length of the extension needed.

iirr i used a ea82 manual steering rack 2 joint linkage. I clearanced out the joints so they wouldn't bind with a burr and had to drill a new slot on the steering shaft for the column. You could just go to pick n' pull and pull a couple of them off a legacy, loyale, gl, or impreza. To extend it you would cut one of those double joints apart then bolt the two pieces on. After that you would measure how big of a piece of rod or thick wall tubing you would need to weld in.

Another thing you can do is use a dremel with a cut off wheel and carefully cut new splines further up the steering shaft, then cut off the original splines. You will still need a longer steering extension but it will reduce the operating angle of the steering shaft so it will be less prone to failure in the future.
