October 24, 20169 yr I have a 98 Legacy L with ABS. I think I have a bad wheel bearing (had to replace an inner tie rod recently so thinking the play wore it even though it sounds like the noise is coming from the other side) and started to take it apart. When I got to the ABS sensor the bolt came out easy enough, but how does the sensor body come out? There is a small gap at the bottom that I tried to wedge a screwdriver in to see if it would pop away from the knuckle, but a youtube I saw said to not do that because you will break it. Any suggestions? Went ahead and put it back together as its my only car but I know its going to need replaced soon.
October 25, 20169 yr Spary PB and tap it so it starts to twist. Back and forth a few times then it will pry out. O.
October 25, 20169 yr Author Don't bother with it. You don't need to remove it to replace the bearing. How so? Should I unplug it somewhere and just leave it in? I am going to have to take it somewhere to get the bearing pressed in, is it far enough out of the way for that?
October 29, 20169 yr Author Also, is it preferred to remove the pinch bolt or just take the ball joint out with it?
October 29, 20169 yr Author Would a 12 ton press be enough to do the wheel bearings? Looked at one at Northern Tools this morning.
October 29, 20169 yr There's a plug on the wire, it should be just inside the frame rail on that side. 12 ton may not be enough for these. They get pretty stuck in there, especially if you live in the rust belt.
October 29, 20169 yr Author I do live in rust country unfortunately. I'm having trouble getting the hub off still. Pinch bolt feels like its going to break, and the castle nut is spinning the bolt on the ball joint. I've been searching the forum and looks like its common and no easy solution.
October 30, 20169 yr No, unfortunately there's no easy way to pop loose those ball joints. If the castle nut is spinning the stud, try putting a jack under the control arm to push up on it and see if it will hold the stud just enough to get the nut loose. You a Jon B. fan?
