April 23, 20178 yr I have a DL that I'm having a headscratching problem with. I converted it to a weber and drove around fine for a while, with a slight ignition problem. It would cut out instantly on start up if you didnt gas it for about 30 seconds. I went back and cleaned all the grounds and it didn't seem to help, found some wiring where I was losing power and that didn't do anything either. I tried replacing the cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires and ignition coil but that seemed to make the problem much worse. It runs but when you try to give it gas it sputters and cuts out. If you take your foot off in time it'll go back to idling. I can drive it around the block occasionally but it'll eventually die after a few minutes. I checked the fuel pump, fuel filter, mixture and timing and its all good. Any ideas what it might be?
April 24, 20178 yr Author I converted to Weber so there's no sight glass for the float but I did fail to check to see if it was properly adjusted before installing it. And the carb is brand new so there shouldn't be a problem with the accelerator pump. Edited April 24, 20178 yr by penguu
April 24, 20178 yr I was having the same issue with my 79, it was the float sticking on mine. Also I see your in Utah, I'm in Colorado and adjusting the Carb for the correct elivation is crucial. Good luck, keep us posted. First gens forever!
April 24, 20178 yr Yeah , check that float adjustment however Weber intends you do that. The issue with the leaky accelerator boots is the modern fuel causing them to melt , crack , and fail. I'm not sure if yours has a more modern material but I know from using old stock carb rebuild kits that even a fresh boot will fail way more quickly than you'd like it to. Just stuff to keep an eye on. keep it going ! Cheers!
April 24, 20178 yr Author Thanks for the help y'all! I'll check the float and adjust if needed. The next thing I have planned is a distributor swap from an EA81. Hopefully these things can get my car back on the road.
