Whine when letting off accelerator

Recommended Posts

Looked at a 2001 H6-3.0 LL Bean Edition this evening for a very good price (as in won't be around after tomorrow morning).

The only thing holding me back is the only unusual thing I noticed on my test drive. There is a whine from the left front when letting off the accelerator at seemingly any speed above about 15 mph. It is road speed dependent not engine speed dependent. Under acceleration I here nothing unusual. First thought was wheel bearing, but having done some research on here and other places I suppose it could be differential or transmission.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

120,000 miles in the Seattle area, so you might say a bit of rain.

I understand, I lived in Queen Ann, Capital Hill, Bremerton from 1997 to 2008

Has the car ever been thru deep water like to the center of the wheel?

If so, the seal may have leaked and cause contamination of the hub/wheel bearing.

Have you ever change the front and rear differential gear oil?
