Timing belt service on 2010 Outback SOHC

Featured Replies

I am doing the 105,000 mile timing belt service on my son' s 2010 Outback.

My question is about the water pump.  The FSM says  to remove the drivers side cam pulley and the back side of the that timing cover to remove the water pump.

The setup looks exactly the same as the water pumps I have replaced on a couple of 2000 OBW with 2.5 SOHC.  I just went ahead and unbolted the water pump and it came right out.  I reinstalled a new Aisin one using the included metal gasket.  Went back together fine with no problems or any weird glitches.

Is there something I am missing by not following the FSM on this replacement?

Thanks in advance.

Well, considering you had no issues installing the new one. I wouldn't worry about what the manual says.

I've had a few times were the service procedure was overcomplicated for the task at hand.

FSM routinely mentions unnecessary steps. Assemble and don't worry about it.

Slightly easier to get the pump in place, but not necessary. and not worth the trouble unless replacing cam seals also.
