June 27, 20178 yr I am doing the 105,000 mile timing belt service on my son' s 2010 Outback. My question is about the water pump. The FSM says to remove the drivers side cam pulley and the back side of the that timing cover to remove the water pump. The setup looks exactly the same as the water pumps I have replaced on a couple of 2000 OBW with 2.5 SOHC. I just went ahead and unbolted the water pump and it came right out. I reinstalled a new Aisin one using the included metal gasket. Went back together fine with no problems or any weird glitches. Is there something I am missing by not following the FSM on this replacement? Thanks in advance.
June 27, 20178 yr Well, considering you had no issues installing the new one. I wouldn't worry about what the manual says. I've had a few times were the service procedure was overcomplicated for the task at hand. Edited June 27, 20178 yr by golucky66
June 28, 20178 yr Slightly easier to get the pump in place, but not necessary. and not worth the trouble unless replacing cam seals also.
June 28, 20178 yr Author Thanks! I got hung up at work last night and didn't get home until too late so covers going on tonight!
June 30, 20178 yr Author Finished putting the car back together. 10 mile test drive revealed no problems.
