Hydraulic Fluid leak, what is this?

Featured Replies

So I was doing an oil change yesterday and I noticed there is some kind of hydraulic fluid leak. It looks old but it still worries me a bit.

It is on both sides in the exact same place and is behind the front wheels. There have not been any fluid leaks on the garage floor, especially nothing that dark. I've had service done on the car in the past at the dealership and they were incompetent as can be so I don't know if it could be related to them or not but I thought I'd put that out there.

I have a road trip coming up soon and I wanted to get this identified. The car is a 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R.

Any help figuring this out would be much appreciated!

Well its not leaking from the sway bar.

Looks like nearest thing in the area is the steering rack. Going to need better pictures from other angles.

looks like someone lubed the swaybar mount bushings.  maybe they were squeaky?

Did you have it serviced anywhere else recently?

Agree with Gloyale, looks like spray grease of some kind on the sway bar bushings.

Not that I was aware of, I wouldn't doubt it if the dealership did it though.

I have not had it serviced anywhere but the dealership. Started doing fluid changes myself once I saw how terrible the dealership is. It's also the only dealership for 3 and a half hours. But I never even thought of it being something they applied. So does the swaybar mount have any sort of fluid inside?

This could have been done by dealership. Last service I had done was brake pads and brake fluid. It's possible they had a TSB for some issue with the swaybar mount squeaking so they preemptively greased it.
