1992 Legacy not starting, flooding with gas

Featured Replies

I have a 1992 Legacy. It has run fine since we got it a few years ago, but suddenly it won't start when cold. It cranks and cranks, and then you smell gas. It has a fuel injector system, but is acting like a carburetor flooding! It got worse today; today it wouldn't start at all, and it's spewing gas and catching on fire. Any guesses? Husband is great with old vehicles but this fuel injector has him baffled. Any guesses? Thanks!

I would think a leaking injector.

If it will not start with your foot off the gas and you think it's flooded, put the gas pedal to the floor and see if it starts.

How's your gas mileage?

Have you looked at the spark plugs?

Something as simple as worn spark plugs can cause a difficult/no start. Easiest thing to check first, assuming battery voltage is 'good' and it cranks over at a normal speed. Make sure it has NGK brand plugs in it.

Wait, it caught fire somewhere!? There's a decent chance that a fuel hose clamp has loosened somewhere, and if someone before you messed with any of the hoses, there's a decent chance they didn't use the more expensive hose that's designed for the higher pressure that fuel injection requires.
