What EJ22 do we have ??

Featured Replies

Hi , hoping to get some help to identify which EJ22 engine we have.  My son purchased the vanagon and as we're stumped trying to find out what goes where without knowing which engine we have.  There is no VIN number on it, we just have these pics, hoping someone can please help.

Thanks in advance

The VIN is engraved/stamped on the flat on the lower vertical corner of the bellhousing. Right side.

We looked there and all over and cannot find the VIN.  Based on some searching it appears that etching the VIN was not a requirement at the time, could this be one without a VIN?  Any other thoughts to ID the engine?

Looks like a 2.0 litre boxer (4 cyl. horozontily opposed) which were typically found in early vanagon conversions using the KEP or Kennedy Engineering Products conversion kits.

No, it sure is a EJ22E (first pic) and probably a phase 1

1996-1998 EJ22 - basically all parts are the same and interchangeable.

If it has dual port exhaust then it's a 1995 or earlier.

There could be two different plug wires and two different timing tensioners but that doesn't matter since that's best identified by looking and matching anyway. basically everything else is the same or interchangeable.
