1980 EA71 Ignition

Recommended Posts

My 1980 Brat ea71 is having an ignition issue. There is a box located right next to the coil that says "transistor IGM." It malfunctions whenever I hit a bump and the car studders and I lose tachometer function for a split second. It stopped working completely once. I got out and traced the wires from the disty back to this box. I banged on it and it started working. I punched in the numbers that were on it and nothing even came up. What is it and where can I get a new one?

Thanks!!!

That is your ignition module.Subaru also calls it a control unit.

Wreckers are the only source I know.

80 Brats and all 79 4wds have this part.

Might be worth opening it up and resoldering.

Pretty sure you could use a later style disty w/an internal module if you are unable to locate this part.

Try this site. I used zip code 86402 and two listings showed up. One in Ontario and one in Virginia. They list it as Ignitor/Coil. You would have to call the yards to see if the Ignitor is still on the coil bracket and if they still have it. Some of them take a long time to remove their listings.

Have a look at this post. It is two pages long. See if your part looks the same.

If I had more info on the part I think I could make one.

So I've found 2 different distributors on rock auto. I know that they are odd brands, but I need one. Which one of them should I get? And will one of these solve the issue?                                     Here's the link. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/subaru,1983,brat,1.8l+h4,1267691,ignition,distributor,7108
