Fuel pump replacement options

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I have an ‘87 GL-10 wagon, (Fuel-injected) bought it last month from an owner who garage-kept it. Great little car.

My fuel pump started leaking from the little bell on the back of the pump, which I would assume is a pressure relief valve.

I’ve been looking for a replacement pump, and finding an original pump is impossible. Napa, Rockauto, autozone, partsgeek; nobody has one.

Now I’m thinking of just getting an aftermarket one... anybody out there have a suggestion of a good pump that will work?

Thanks Sam. You da man.

did you have any problems with pressure? Did you have to put in a regulator or anything?

No regulators or anything.  The inlet hose had to be rerouted.  I bought an extra hose and routed it as a letter "S".  I also bought a 2 and 1/4 inch U-bolt and drilled two extra holes in the original bracket.  Shoved a cork under the pump to cushion it.  That was it.

My main concern was the lack of barbs on the pump's tubes.  I was afraid that the hose may slide off.  Checked it yesterday.  Everything looks fine.

Just about any external efi pump will do the job. Look for one from a V6 or something of the like and use that. They shouldn’t be much bigger if at all.

I’m using an external efi pump from a ‘91 V6 Holden VN Commodore. That’s a 3.8 litre from memory so it’s got loads to deal with the 2.2L in my L series ;)

Cheers

Bennie
