2005 legacy  with 80k miles on it.  There is this ringing sound that occurs in drive and reverse.  Appears to go away in park and neutral.  It will also persist when driving occasionally.  When it is absent when driving if I hit a bump in the road I'll hear it briefly.  I read about loose heat shields causing squeaks.  Does this sound like it?

I'm guessing an exhaust heat shield. They will only vibrate at certain rpms, and idle in gear is just right. Thump the exhaust in a few places and see if you can hear anything.
