After I reinstalled the instrument cluster I could not get the key out so I removed some plastic and pushed in on the solenoid to let the key out. After that it seemed to work OK. But alas, I had to do the solenoid trick again.

 

What is the source of the problem? Could I epoxy the solenoid button in so that it can no longer offend me?
