  2. now that most of the important projects are out of the way, it is time to work on the BRAT again several months ago I bought a newer ea71 from '84 5spd fwd hatch it has the side mount starter I would like to mate it to the 5spd d/r from '85 wagon what is required to mate them and install in the '79 BRAT? clutch, transmission input shaft, driveshaft, and axle stubs compatability concerns.

  4. my welder came with K-T e71t-gs self shielding welding wire, it works fine I also bought the made in Italy 2# item# 44877 for $15 at harbor freight, and the Hobart e71t-11 for $20 at tractor supply my lincoln pro-core 100 cost $75 at a pawn shop 3 years ago the harbor freight blue flames helmet is good, bought a second one because the first one disappeared after welding class one day. try miller and hobart welding boards for more help ESAB has a lot of info.
  5. try fuelly for "average" fuel economy, mine is the gl-10 it has the ea81 with ea82 intake and carb, with the ea82T 3.7 PB 4wd the engine makes more power than the clutch can handle, which doesn't mean much which trans. and gearing you have will make a difference as to the "power" for going uphill or against the wind
  6. and I was thinking no more Joe Walsh http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life's_Been_Good

  10. the '85 & '86 had different style shifter from my '85 before I bought it I like my "crest brown" '86 GL-10 better, roof rack, sunroof, added LSD, hitch, ea81, slightly newer radio and equalizer you have ea82t, not ea81t, you seemed to indicate you had both in one post, IIRC
  11. confirmed: I found an old set for a ? '79 lincoln continental town car in the shed that are not as bad as the old DUDs clearancing of the bump stop lower pad must be done, no problem for angle grinder with cutoff wheel. still looking for FRONT inserts!

  13. this is what YOU do 0. remove sparkplugs 1. remove valve covers 2. check pushtubes, are any off? 3. rotate engine and make sure valves are moving smoothly 4. rotate engine and make sure pistons are moving smoothly 5.
  14. for $1200 and a bit of patience and labor, one can come up with a nice rig for example: buy '85 wagon for $75, drive for a while buy '84 BRAT for $ 100, drive for a while, transmission goes out, swap transmission and driveshaft from wagon to BRAT, in process of re-installing engine the carb is damaged, swap in intake manifold and carb from wagon drive until scary to drive any more due to severe rusting buy '86 GL-10 TURBOWAGON with bad engine for $100, install engine, radiator from BRAT and fuel pump from wagon fuel tank is internally bad, cheat with 5 gallon tank in trunk area on way to buy fuel tank from j/y, have assistant help install at j/y parking lot use the opportunity to install LSD $100 later back 1/2 of driveshaft goes bad, rear U-joint, install same from BRAT nice wagon for about $500 by the time all is done! lots of little incidental parts and work went into this wagon I had vw's between the BRAT and wagon, then added a '78 BRAT and '96 SVX
  15. there may be issues with using hydro lifter heads TURBO heads are different
  16. I have MSA107 good for '77 , $25 U$ digital version available
  17. it appears to be fairly big! from http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=95356&highlight=ea82t+piston can look at more this weekend
  18. tires mounted, picked them up today, unloaded onto trailer, look at bill, CHARGED FOR "MOUNTING", notice tires are not balanced, take bill back to store, ask why was charged for "MOUNTING", "MOUNTING" is code for "BALANCE", wonder why not balanced, explain that I did NOT see any weights , go back home and load tires into car again to take them back to be balanced, after balancing they have weights - imagine that , take tires back and unload on trailer, admire the newly installed weights , record DOT code, 2 from Brazil, 2 from OK. at least it's a friendly small town tire store, worked directly with the "assistant manager" I kept the one "good" tire I took in, so now I have a spare for the spare paid CA$H 185-70/14 winterfire 4 * $ 39 "MOUNTING" 4 * 10 valve stems 4 * 2.25 tire disposal 3 * 2.5 sales tax 14.88 total $227.38 pics later once installed just a teaser will most likely be installing while doing brake work
  19. IIRC = If I Recall Correctly try a HARDWARE store or your STASH of bolts I buy them by the # at a local farm store with extensive hardware section
