Ej to Ea wiring

Featured Replies

Hey guys need your help.

Almost finished with wiring the Ej into my 88 Rx but I have some questions.

For the starter wire from the ecu, do I just splice that into the small wire already on the starter?

And, second, for the neutral wire from the ecu, do I just ground that wire so the ecu thinks the clutch pedal is depressed for start-up??

My wifes RS was a manual and you had to have the clutch pedal depressed, even though the car is in neutral, for the car to start.

Any of you that have done this, please chime in. Thanks guys.

Oops, didn't catch the reference about starting when I messaged you.

The neutral wire on the ECU doesn't control whether it will start or not. It raises the idle, changes timing, and a few other small things to keep it from stalling. If the ECU thinks it's always in gear, the engine can stall when clutch in.

In case anyone else is looking for this info. Starter wire needs 12v while cranking, It can be spliced in anywhere between the ignition switch and starter. Most fuel injection cars will have an existing splice in there for this purpose.

Also there's an AT/MT identifier pin on these earlier ECUs. Grounded for one, open for the other. I don't remember which but it's been documented on here.

Yes, I thought taking it to the clutch switch as well, but the 88 Rx doesn't have a neutral switch, hence the question what to do with it?????

Thx

Pretty sure there's a neutral switch on the transmission, if you wanted to use it.

But yea, clutch switch is fine

Being the neutral wire from the ecu is only one wire, do I just ground the other wire from the plug at the transmission?

Ecu is just seeing that as a open or closed circuit right?

I assume so, I'd have to study to remember. But almost certainly switch to ground.
