August 22, 200421 yr Yeah just thought I would throw this out to see if anyone can tell me if it's possible to machine an aluminum pulley for the crank ring that is cast steel/iron and have no problems with temp fluctuations that could make problems with timing as in shrinkage, expansion till the ring cracks, expansion till the ring makes a groove to the point it's loose, or anything else the reason why is I am trying to figure out a way to make a new pulley for Oddcomp if he decides to go through with it to make a prototype pulley to get the thing running and if it works with aluminum without problems then to make a few more out of T-6 and prolly sell them for so I can get a smithy or a simple metal lathe to make more. I will find out soon what type of aluminum it is but hopefuly it's T-6
August 22, 200421 yr Author talked to oddcomp lastnight and sounds like it is T-6 and anyone gonna answer my question????
August 23, 200421 yr umm isn't the sensor that picks up the timing signals from the trigger wheel magnetic in nature? Thus wouldn't using aluminium be a bad Idea?
August 23, 200421 yr Author the trigger wheel aka ring is actualy a stamped steel ring so it is what picks up the timing so aluminum for just the pulley would be ok I am just concerned with the expansion differences between the aluminum and steel
August 23, 200421 yr Author k I was gonna make one on all manual stuff like a lathe and mill and make it a press fit and/or bolt on
August 23, 200421 yr Author I am doing it myself at work on my own time cause it's not my area exactly but I do have access to alot of equip at work just need to fill out a form to use it and get permission from the areas superviser and for me I am doing it as a favor for Oddcomp so he can get back on track with the DIS and also it would have to be under the table so to speak cause it is my workplace and I am just gonna do it for free with the supply of a pulley to spec and the material to make the pulley out of unless he wants to supply me with a 6 pack or something that is lol and it's also for me for a learning experience that way if later on I want to do this I can on my own for my vehichles
August 23, 200421 yr i had some stuff to say.. but i forgot maybe when i get back i will remember... hmm
August 23, 200421 yr if the aluminum part bolts on you wont have a problem with heat expansion rates. Press fitting is more likely to have problems, but may still work.
