'90 Legacy FWD to AWD conversion

Featured Replies

What's needed to make this happen? Anyone done this?

I presume it's easiest w/same year but what range of years will work easiest? The current car is A/T

you'll need, tranny, tcu, driveshaft, tranny crossmember, tranny mounts, rear diff, rear crossmember, rear halfshafts, all rear suspension including lateral links and trailing arms, rear knuckles/hubs, gas tank, and probably a few other things.

I presumed it was a big pain in the arse but was curious what all is involved.

It'd likely be much easier to take the motor out of a FWD A/T car and put it into an AWD M/T car right?

yeah I guess that would be easier.

The AWD portion really wasn't too bad....you're just swapping all the rear end components.

Getting the AT out was a pain, and putting the pedal stuff in was a pain because I'm using a hydraulic clutch, and the 90 MY did not come with holes pre-drilled for the clutch master cylinder. So I had to drill the holes....and all that good stuff.

In my opinion this would be a waste of time and money. With early Legacys going for less than $500.00 on ebay regularly (and often for $200 to $300).

Sell the 2WD and buy a 4WD.........

Unless you have a lot of work on the car already, or very attached to it....yeah it's easier to just get an AWD one.

Sure it can be done, mine will be driving proof, but it's not a simple sunday afternoon task.

Is it worth it to YOU? That's what really matters. Sure its a big waste of time and money but if you want to do it the do it! I converted my 2WD GL wagon to a 4WD Dual Range setup. All those fancy parts mentioned above I had to take from one car and swap to another.

You are right tho; easier to just swap engines into an AWD model :)
