Just replaced the rear pads on the 98 legacy...113,500 miles on the original pads...not too shabby.

That's actually not a big deal. Subaru's don't use the rear brakes much. You can go through 5 front pads by the time the rears need attention...

Well, that and he's got a manual transmission. . . . some downshifting now and again does a lot to preserve brakepad life. (Not that it's a substitute for braking)
