I have used CarFax several times in the last few years and have been satisfied with their service.

I have heard good about both.

Carfax gets my vote.

 

I bought a 30 day unlimited subscription to Carfax late in August. Ran it on a number of cars & always had very current data. When it ran out I discovered that you could only get one 'unlimited' subscription every 6 months. So I picked up a 60 day Autocheck unlimited subscription (for about the same cost). None of the cars I ran had the same level of detail & few contained any data later than 2002. I e-mailed autocheck about it over a week ago & they have yet to respond.

I've not used autocheck, but I can tell you a little about carfax. Carfax is pretty good for checking the title history / previous owners. However, I ran it on my car once and it showed a transfer of ownership when I moved from one county to another. It's also pretty good with checking the odometer reading. It is not foolproof for accidents, however. I had two vehicles which sustained body damage. Both had sparkling clean carfax records (I did not run autocheck) when both indeed had over $3,000 worth of damage to them. I would advise finding a trustworthy body shop and also a trustworthy mechanic to inspect the vehicle. It may cost you a few bucks for them to preform this service (after all, it does use their time) but I think that would be better than either carfax or autocheck. Good luck.

Both are only going to pick up total loss accidents. Or major accidents, I think they only show damage 10k and up.

 

Good point on checking it yourself or someone who knows cars. I can easily spot wrecked-then-fixed cars when I go over them for friends and family.

Carfax is quirky w/ accident reporting.

My roomie's '92 bronco showed a minor fender collision in 1993.

My dad's '99 Ford P/u was nearly totalled in '00, 9K in damage, requiring a new frame and rear box - not a mention of it on CarFax.
