As this car is new to me and I have little to no experience with push button four wheel drive engagement , I need some knowledge shared with me before the snows hit up here in Colorado. When I push in the button on the left side of the shifter, the dash panel shows the four wheel drive is engaged. The problem is that the light soon pops of (especially if I upshift). Am I still engaged or not? I had it out in the parking lot early one morning and I had the sensation on being in four wheel drive there, but I don't get the same feel when I'm on the road (harder/jerky stearing in corners) . The only way I can think of testing this out is to jack up the car so all four wheels are off the ground, start it up, put it into gear, engage the four wheel drive switch and have my son tell me if the back wheels are turning as I go through gear changes. Any other (less potentially hazardous) methods out there?

Blundering my way toward Subaru Knowledge

I have written a repair article

describing the push button 4wd system.

It has pictures of some of the components.

It may help you understand the system and

help you diagnose your problem.

Please email me and I'll send you a copy.

I have mailed it to several people

but have received no reply

so I do not know if it helped

them.

Skip, it sounds like I could use that info, also.I have an 87 GL wagon that doesn't seem to be driving all the wheels although the display indicates that it is.This car has the 3 speed auto matic.I shouldn't have gotten rid of my daughter's 88 hatchback with the 5 spd.

I need to fix this before I sell it.Thanks:)

hehe... bring it up to redline and N-Bomb it and then come back and look at the tiremarks!!!! well... you might loose your tranny!

IF it feels jerky in corners... likely its in 4WD.... there is no center diff so it will start to bind up if its on a high friction surface.
