Hello !

 

This site is great !

seen lots of things that will be good to know when i have time to start doing work on my new sube

 

but first i have some questions i hope someone can answer for me

 

here goes .......

 

i recently bought a '90 Loyale Wagon - 4WD - 5-Speed - 260,000 Km

{High Klicks, But Really good price}

 

when i got it

i could hear a CV 'click' from the rear drivers side

i took it in to get that fixed

and was told the drive shaft was way worse and had to be done instead

ok, fine

 

still has the rear CV 'click'

 

now, my first question is:

 

Does the rear drive-line always spin ?

or should turning off the 4WD stop all activity back there ?

some times it feels like i'm always driving in 4WD

{but i'm new to standard, so i'm not sure if it's just my driving}

 

and to go with that question:

 

Is it difficult to do the CV myself ?

{or my cheap backyard mechanic friend}

and is it that ?

or am i barking up the wrong tree ??

 

OK next question :

 

i also have the 'check engine' light come on alot

sometimes in the driveway, sometimes i drive drive for awhile before it shows up

 

i've been told by my sube friends

that its probably the o2 Sensor

that sound correct ??

 

OK, last one : {for now}

 

i've noticed in the last few days

when i park in my driveway {sloped}

i get a leak

not sure if it's engine oil or tranny oil .....

doesn't seem to show up if i park in a flat place

 

bad seal ??

 

and if so

how hard is that ??

 

any other thought or suggestions would be great !!!

 

other than these few problems

i'm really enjoying my first Subaru {and standard!}

what a great little car !!!!

It would help to know a little more about your car before some of the questions get answered. Such as whether or not your 4WD is "Fulltime", "pushbutton" (on the shifter), or "shift on the fly" have to grab a lever to put it into 4wd. On the Loyales I am not sure what was offered... might have dropped ome options by then.

 

Anyway, rear axles are pretty easy, as they are just slid onto splined stub axles at the differential and at the wheel hub. There is a roll pin (aka compression pin) that goes through the driveaxle and stub axle to hold them together... need to drive it out with a pin-punch 1/4in or 7/32in... not sure what metric "real" size (metric car, eh?) is. Sometimes the splines are rusty or gummed and don't want to break loose. Not too hard to do, though.

 

Yes, the driveshaft and driveaxles always turn on the 4WD Subarus. Depending on transmission, it may or may not be getting power at any given time.

 

Engine leaks are common. Front/rear crankshaft seals, camshaft seals, cam cover gaskets all are common leakers. Lots of threads here talk about this.

 

And consider replacing the timing-belts unless you know that they were replaced recently.

 

As far as the engine check light, the enginc control unit (ECU) is under the steering wheel, prob behind a plastic trim piece, and has a flashing LED when there has been an error. Count the flashes (blink-blink..blink-blink-blink.....) and we can tell you where to find the mening of the code.

Huh??? Either I am trying too hard to use pre-"Loyale" experience, or you are not looking where I would like you to look. Or both... :)

 

Without meaning to sound flippant, how does a blinking light give you '1990 Loyale'? Are you looking a blinking LED under the steering column (aha! I said "wheel" didn't I?)?

 

Sounds like maybe my directions were inaccurate... maybe?

Did you try the diagnostic connectors under the hood before reading the blinking light to get codes?

yup i was in the right place

under the dash

 

i tried to follow the code retreval directions in the haynes manual

{standard purchase with every car i buy}

 

all i got was the code for year and model

or something like that

 

maybe i didn't do the correct connectors ......

the instruction just say to hook them up

 

the haynes manual shows pictures of themm

but under the dash there are three or four that look almost the same

 

anyone know the color scheme or anything ??

 

any help would be great !!!
