it is. He had about 5 of them. One for $250. But I will get the XT, its cheaper at $150.

that makes me feel even better about the great deal i got! .. should be doing the rear diff and stuff next weekend.. Are you going to keep the 2wd suspension, or use the 4wd?

whichever i can get away with! lol. I will be putting 2wd rear suspension and a strut in that XT from another one that will be junked, then sell the whole car.

2500 miles...no problems.

  • 2 weeks later...

2800 miles now.

Changed to a 180 deg thermostat. Put some dielectric grease on the ig. system, plugwires and disty. Thinking about getting an Accel coil soon.

The first pair of lights for my rally lighting project are here. Extra hood has also been aquired.

sooooo, basically, the test was a success and there's no reason not to build a higher compression turbo EA82? :D

glad it worked for you, BTW. I know how disappointing it is when a favorite project doesn't work out..

it is a sucess so far, by no means is the test complete. If this engine lasts for more than 40k miles, it will be, i hope. I've had projects fail before.

Ahhhh yes, but we learn from failed projects. ( we learn how frustrated we can get, how much money we can piss away, ect.) Hope it holds up for ya! you are insperation for me.;)

lol. Yeah, thanks! I know how those things go...

oh, and 3000 mile mark was passed this morning.

are you doing compression tests every 1000 miles or something? or how are you monitoring it? just by mpg and "feel" when you're driving it or something? (not criticizing, sincerely curious)

I have been going by what problems Ive had, and gas milage. It went from 27, to 24, to 22 for a while, but its back up to 26 now. Also oil consumption, which is next to zero. Havent done any compression tests at all......so, i dont know about it.

The feel is a big part of it. And it feels better each day, especially the tranny. If I ever get the $ I will do that ATF flush cleaning procedure.

Im considering grabbing the turbo components off of my sacked turbowagon and putting it on a carbed or spfi block, in the next sube i get. This topic has been very helpful. But I have a question: Calebz, you asked about 2wd vs 4wd suspension. What is the difference? Different ride hights or spring rates? If i do a 2wd to 4wd conversion will the 2wd springs be less suited to off-road?

the 4wd has some sort of manual height adjustment...like 1 inch, according to my owners manaul. I kept hearing that some 2wd's came with it, never looked on mine though.

I think that the 4wd sedan and wagon had slightly stronger rear springs...dunnot for sure though...

Ok, my parts booklet, that I finally found today shows 7 different springs, for 4wd and FT4wd cars,

Coupe: Turbo 21091GA360, non turbo 2101GA350

Sedan: GL 85-87 21091GA240, 88-93 21191GA810

Sedan RX 21105GA060

Wagon: 85-87 21091GA230, 88-94 21091GA840

now for 2wd

Coupe: 85-87 21091GA190, 88-90 21105GA110

Sedan: 85-93 21105GA060

Wagon: all 21091GA230

Also, this book shows different rear crossmembers for 4wd and FT4wd...

The 2wd doesn't have the adjustment.. at least mine doesn't

the 4wd has sort of a racheting adjuter thing.. you have to set them to height before installation though.. I have a set of each.. not sure which I am going to use yet.

Alrighty guys/gals,

Due to the increase in fuel prices and no increase in paycheck, today starts the experiment running on regular 87 octane fuel. From the things I've read, the higher octanes are really only needed for high performance driving...that's not me since this is my ONLY car/daily driver...therefore, I will go with 87, and as usual, I will update ya'll every once in a while.

Oh and...

3274.4 miles and no problems.

I plan on doing the ATF trans flush sometime soon, then I will put 85w-140 back in it, I will probably change the oil when it reaches 5000, I'll change the filter in the next 500 or so...oh yeah, my lights are hooked up. See my other post about that: pub1.ezboard.com/fultimat...9154.topic

That's all for now!

Horrible fuel mileage last time with the 93, 22.8 mpg. Of course I was hauling lot o parts last week.

It detonates/knocks pretty bad when I get on it, and expecially at WOT. its a good thing that SUBARU has the knock sensor and that IT REALLY WORKS. Under easy drving and below 5 psi there is only slight knock'age at first, only lasts for half a sec, then everything is smooth as silk. Depending on fuel milage next time, I'll see what fuel I will put in it for good.

dude, go back to 93!!!! dont let the computer fix the detination, just make it a non factor. definatly not worth risking your only car for cheap gas.

I WILL be going BACK to the 93, for sure, unless I get like 34 MPG or something.

I finnally can tell the true difference between the octane levels!

Did you retard the timing?

Actually first, what were you experiencing to make you change it?

My problem is, the digi dash boost gauge goes to full (although I can't hear the turbo spinning) if I open the throttle more than 1/2 and after that the car kinda stalls - no power - stutters. I don't have any clue what's wrong. Somedays it'll be fine and I break traction in 1st and others I can't get to 45 mph. I think I have some bad wiring in the car, the fuel pump doesn't get ANY power through the stock wiring. I have it wired from the battery...

Now, what exactly did you adjust on the flapper door? Did you change the set screw under the black cover?? Which direction did you turn the screw??

FYI, its an '86XT w/ N/A pistons and a Legacy turbo, I am running 91 octane @ 5200 ft. stock turbo timing w/ NGK wires, plugs, and accel coil.

Thanks in advance,

David J.

Email me about the pics for the meter adjsutment, I might forget. lol

The two reasons I changes gas was cost and jsut to see what woudl happen. Im going back to 93 next time.

where's those images...

edited.

OK, ignore the reg and green circles, I havent messed with those, nor do i know exactly what they do.

Now, the BLUE one...you cant really make it out, but its a 8mm (i think) phillips bolt/screw, and it holds down a small plate that hold a circular plastic ring down, and in that is the spring for the flapper door. Loosen'in the screw will cause the ring to fly in one direction and loose tension, there for you just lsot the factory setting! Now, you can adjsut the tension to what you want, more for leaner, looser for richer. You will ahve to adjust the idle after you adjust the spring [/image]

just yesterday i adjust that spring....on the gearwheel, one tooth change mixture about 10% leaner or richer....depending will you loosen or tighten the spring...

there is rumor at with flapt.meter you can use 50% more flow injectors and you can adjust the mixture back the right with adjusting the spring....;) and i can sure it is possible:)
