ej22 transplant, need help narrowing down years on engine and tranny

Featured Replies

I am now seriously considering doing an ej22 engine transplant into my brat, I just need to figure out which leg. engine I should use, are the older ones (90-94) easier to swap in than the ones afterwards? they are different, after around 95 they gradually increased the power.

and I want to use a 5speed dual range from a GL, they started making the new gl's in 85, but when did they stop?

I just need some years and models when I call the local junkyards.

I am thinking:

90-94 legacy-(2.2L engine)

85-? GL 4WD D/R (prob. a wagon) for the tranny

That's not a bad combo but that an EJ motor will not bolt up to an EA tranny, unless you buy an adapter kit from Mudrat

d/r wagons came from '85 to early 90's. The GL non turbo wagons and sedans will have the d/r but the Loyales, DLs, GL-10 turbo and GL turbo will have a push button 4wd.

okay, its 525 for the conversion kit, 100 for the 5spd linkages, what is the average cost for a 5spd d/r and a leg. 2.2L?

well it all depends. I think a d/r 5-speed would go for about 100-150 bucks MAYBE... the engine will be a little more but make sure you get the fuel pump, lines, ECU, wiring harness, and the motor. You might want to research all the parts you're gonna need for it first because its not just the motor and the tranny, there's a lot more to it. I would myself look for a wrecked Legacy for the conversion...
