1991 legacy purchase

Featured Replies

i'm looking at a friend's 1991 legacy wagom w/ 170000 miles. it's pretty clean, w/ afew body dings, but overall ok. maintenance records indicate ok schedule. they have had it for 7-8 years w/ no problems. they want $1800. i am new to subarus, having been a bmw guy for several years. my questions are pretty vague, but mostly just "what am i getting into, and what problems swhould i expect?" a friend tells me that the cylinders are prone to failure at high miles. any help appreciated. bruce

170k miles with good maintenance records? That engine is barely broken in, no I'm not kidding :)

My 91 Legacy has 138k and the engine runs so well, I can still hit the tested top speed of the car when it was new. I've driven brand-new cars that don't run as good as my car.

Things to look for: leaking valve cover gaskets (cheap and easy), cracked knock sensors (also cheap and easy), and if the timing belts were done at 120k, might wanna investigate doing those soon.
