I have a noise inside my timing cover that sounds like a bearing going bad. I am going to pull the belt off this weekend & check out the parts. I understand a chain wrench will hold the cam sprockets in place while you loosen the attachment bolts. I do not have the special subaru wrench #499977700. Will that also work to rotate the camshaft & crankshaft? Thanks.

On the Phase I 2.2 I have used a chain wrench to hold the cam sprockets. It's pretty tough to do without damaging the rear cover, I don't think I could have done it without help. The way to do it is to first cut a piece of the old timing belt equal in length to the circumference of the sprocket. Place it over the sprocket to protect it from the chain. Then carefully use the chain wrench to hold the sprocket still. Depending on your chain wrench you may not be able to move the wrench at all without breaking the cover.

 

You can buy a generic cam sprocket holding tool for about $20 or $30.

I just replaced my timing belt a month or two ago and it was pretty easy. I posted a write up on it you might want to look at. I loosened the cam sprocket bolts before I removed the belt. To be exact I used a big screwdriver to lock the transmission/engine in place, and then just loosened the sprocket bolts. The timing belt holds them in place and the bolts came off pretty easy. There's a little access cover right on top of the tranny bell housing that lets you put a screwdriver in to keep the engine from turning.
