Scoobywagon
Well...you're definitely going to need a dash kit. Scosche makes one, I can get you a part number. Should cost no more than $15-20 at your local stereo shop. That's just going to be a piece of plastic that helps retain the deck in the dash, since the dash console is not deep enough to allow a modern deck to seat properly. Beyond that, the wiring isn't difficult, neither is speaker mounting. Assuming you have the tools. There's plenty of people on here that have the tools and are willing to help you out. Don't know where oroville is, so I'm assuming you aren't somewhere near me. Its just a matter of cutting appropriate holes in the door panels for your speakers, and wiring them to the deck. You'd have to do that even if you wanted to use the factory speakers simply because the factory system uses a common ground system. That's not so hard, either. This isn't a hard thing, but there are some tools you need to have before you start.
TheSubaruJunkie
You said hatch... i assume its an EA81 hatch. Its not hard to mount speakers at all. Just find a place for them to fit, and find something to screw them into. You should have no problem fitting speakers up to 6" in the doors, and if you want to cheat goto walmart and buy some enclosures for 6x9's... and get a couple 6x9s to put in the back somewhere. You will need something to take up about 1/2" cause any standard stereo will be too long to fit. You'll quickly find out that the heater core is in the way. As far as wiring is involved, its pretty simple. I'd suggest running new wire. You can do it the cheap and easy way and just run a single hot from the battery post (positive) to the dash. Then run a ground to any part of bare metal (body, firewall) Your stereo will have 1 or 2 wires that need juice. You could just tap both into the same positive, but your stereo will need to be manually turned off (wont turn off with key). Then just run the wire to your new speakers. The hardest part of it all is running the wires and keeping them neat. Expecially routing the speaker wires to the doors... thats a pain! -Brian
samo
See: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25468Should give you a point in the right direction. For the dash, you'll want a slant console out of an '80-'81(?). I think there's a couple for sale right now in the marketplace. As for speakers, like everybody's said, just measure, cut, mount, and wire it up. Don't ever pay a professional to install your stereo. Take it from me - I used to be one.
