Day 1: Tranny Swap

Featured Replies

well my friend and i have been working for 10 hours on the tranny...Got the old auto out and the pedal assembly in....spent like 2 hours on the tourque converter...what a pain...now we are stuck on the flex plate...all of the bolts on it are holding on for dear life, we managed to crack one socket trying to get them off and we stopped for the night for fear we might round them off more than we already have....any bright ideas on how to get these babys off?? we put some WD 40 on them and tapped them with a hammer a few times before we went off to bed.....Any ideas would be appreciated.....Josh..youve done this...THAWA...anyone

Go down to the home depot and get a propane (or gas of your choice) tourch and heat that sucker untill it is glowing. Throw an impact socket on it and go to town.

Good luck!

Yeah,

We have a tourch at our disposal, and were just about to try that. ALL of these little buggers are tight after 285K Miles (enough to break the 6-sided Craptsman socket we got to hold!)... I just really hope none of them shear off :slobber:

I'm with 777, if you do not have an impact driver, get one. The cheapest (and probably best for your problem) is the kind that you hit with a hammer to drive it. Combine this with the correct size of impact socket, and a good dose of penetrating oil, and you should have few problems getting the tight bolts off. The act of hitting the impact driver gives a force to0ward the bolt as well as a turning force, which is a double action to break the bolt loose. It is also useful in releasing those pent up aggressions from the frustration you are having with these bolts. . .

You really cannot hit these drivers too hard, just be sure to not miss and hit your hand instead. . .
