We just got our 2005 2.5i wagon on Saturday. My dog travels with me quite often and likes to sit in the front passenger seat. Even at only 30 lbs, she still triggers the fasten seatbelt warning chimes. I tried buckling the seatbelt behind her, but she still got tangled in it. I would like to be able to disable the passenger side seatbelt warning altogether (lights and chimes). The owner's manual is no help in this matter. Has anyone figured out how to do this?

I don't know for sure if this will work, but my limited electrical knowledge says it might. Obviously when you turn on the ignition, if the passenger seatbelt isn't buckled, the buzzer goes off. So there must be a switch inside the seat belt receiver that in disconnected when the belt is buckled up properly. So, follow the seat belt receiver down along the centre (Canadian spelling) console until you find the wiring harness where it disconnects. Unplug the wiring harness connector and see what happens. If no buzzer sounds when you turn on the ignition, great. If it does, try joining the contacts inside the harness with a jumper wire and try again. Maybe someone else has a different handle on this one. Good luck!

On a BMW if you turn the key on with anything in that circuit disconnected it triggers the airbag light. This can only be turned off by buying the SRS specific light resetting tool or going to the dealer.

You might be better off fastening the belt and putting a cheap lower cover over the belt system, or rationally putting the dog in the back.

Yeah it works if done properly. Turn the ignition key to on but DON'T start the engine. Buckle and unbuckle the driver's belt I think 10 or 15 times quickly then turn the ignition key to OFF without starting the car. The next time you start the car, the chime will sound 5 or 6 times and disregard anyhting about the passenger seat. It worked for my 05 OBi Ltd 6 months ago and has never returned. Good riddance to the nagging chime "reminding" me of what I already know, thank you very much!

You should see the other goofy procedures used to disable or change options for certain features in the car! I have a partial list of the technical manual for the 2005 Legacy and outback, and after looking over the manual, it appears that the 2005 Legacy/Outback uses a special computer communication network between all the computers in the car to simplify the wiring. I think there are two different "networks" the car uses, one called a "CAN" and the other called a "LAN". I'm not sure what they mean, but I'll have to look at the technical manual again to find out.
