AWD Transmission R&R How big of a pain?

Featured Replies

93 Legacy Wagon 2.2 AWD 5 speed transmission.

I will be doing it on a garage floor with no transmission lift (other than my arms and floor jack) and no hoist.

From those of you who have yanked a transmission how big of a pain is this?

With 1 being as easy as an oil change to 10 being as painful as smashing your thumb with a hammer 17 times in a row.

I know it won't be a picnic but I have put transmissions in VW Rabbits with no jack and only my arms as a lift and I didn't kill myself (at the time I wish I had). I am tight with the $$ so I am willing to put up with quite a bit but I don't want to be "penny wise and pound foolish".

Let me know your thoughts,

Greg

considering I've done a TAURUS on a garage floor with no lift, I don't think an AWD Soobie tranny will be too hard :-) The older ones it's almost easier to pull the motor, and lift the trans out that way

by yourself with an engine lift - easy. you wouldn't have any problems at all. just pull motor and trans at the same time, lay them on the floor and go to town.

by yourself from underneath - dropping the tranny is easy as cake. i can have one out in like an hour. getting it back in is the trick. fun lining it up. all in all not terribly challenging, just bulky and awkward.
