December 27, 200421 yr Hi all. I just had a local shop replace the right front axle seal(it was leaking on the exhaust...). I picked the car up, got a mile down the road and had terrible vibration and thunking in the right front. Returned to shop which was already closed for the evening(nice of him to test drive his work- huh?) Any ideas on what the tech forgot to tighten or what he may have damaged while replacing the seal? Thanks.
December 28, 200421 yr Author Check the lug nuts? Occam's razor. No. Too dark and cold(northern NH) - and late for work. I'll check later after work. I almost hope it ISN't anything that simple! Incompetence and sloppy work irritate me
December 28, 200421 yr While you're checking the lugnuts, check the castle nut for tightness too. Hopefully your mechanic didn't over-extend the axle and ruin the inner joint (DOJ). Does the vibration occur while accelerating and go away immediately when you let off the gas? That's a classic symptom for a bad DOJ. Check the DOJ boots also; if one is torn, the DOJ is likely bad.
