Sometimes it seems to be reading close to correct, other times it is reading ~ 6K rpm when it's actuallly doing between 1500 and 2k rpm :( any ideas?

I would look for loose connections around the distributor and coil areas first before replacing anything. There is a notice in the USRM section of the forum in the electrical system section that may help you. I would check everything before replacing the distributor though.
