What'a a bad bearing sound like?

Featured Replies

I have an occasional noise from the front driver side. Usually happens when colder. Sounds like the wheel is hitting the fender or such. Doesn't sound like a brake sound. CV axle less than 5000 miles. No visable defects. Can't really hear sound when window is down. More from the footwell. Doesn't stop when there is no load on the engine. Turning doesn't seem to make a difference.Revolution dependent. Faster, more thunks. Slower, less. Could it be a bearing?

It could be.

I'd check to see of the axle nut was tight, and the condition of the CV boots first.

Dumb question ... what's a "doj"?

Bearings usually scream - probably a bad cv axle or doj.

They scream and then after a few miles, they sound like the whole front end is falling off! It was so loud, it totally drowned out the sound of my blown ring and pinion and leaky exhaust.

Turn up the radio.

I would have sworn it was tire noise until I replaced them and the noise continued. Rear bearing was the problem.

Your description sounds like it could be brakes (rusty rotors) rubbing to me, but I can't hear it unless you drive past.
