LSD Install <2000 Forester>

Featured Replies

I have a 2000 Forester L WITHOUT a limited slip differental which was only available on the S model. Is it possible to have this installed and replace the current differental ? Cost ?

if the gear ratio is the same, you should be able to swap the whole assembly, case and all. The key is finding one with the right ratio and VLSD. Typically all of them with an automatic transmission will have one ratio and of the 5-speeds will have another. Also I'm not sure if the VLSD was available with an automatic transmission.

This has come up in the past. Usually not 100% conclusive I'd say.

I'm quite sure that you cannot just change the "guts" of the differential.

I've also heard that the splines on the half shafts are different... Maybe even the length too.

You'd really have to find someone that has done it. Or a mechanic that really knows his stuff. Or be willing to research it yourself. I'm sure it is possible, but you might have to change out more than you'd first expect.

The VLSD isn't too effective. If go to the trouble of doing this, you should really look for a Torque sensing type LSD, like I think was available on some WRX models.
