Hi, i own a Subaru Legacy 1993 L wagon(non-turbo) and i just got some new codes however not to sure how to fix these problems or what they are!

 

The first code i got was 24 which was the duty solenoid 3

and the second was 33 the speed sensor 2. Plz help! im doin the same as the emoticon!!!!!

A solenoid (technically speaking) is a coil of wire, but for cars it refers to some sort of electrical actuator. The coil of wire is charged and magnetically moves a center rod of some sort causing something to happen. You are in the wrong forum for finding about duty solenoids and such because this is for older cars (pre-1990 or Loyales, not Legacys), not later ones. The VSS 2 is located on/in the transmission and would have to be checked by a professional. (VSS 1 is in the dash) The ECU uses it to compute the optimum advance curve for timing and other things, such as load. I do not know later trannies, just earlier ones, so I can't give you any advice on how to fix/replace it.

A couple things are not correct in this picture.

 

First, did you pull the aforementioned codes from the fuel injection computer (ECU)

or

the the transmission computer (TECU)?

 

These code definitions are from the TECU.

 

Second, if you mean TECU -

it is Duty Solenoid C not 3.

Numbers refer to shift solenoids not duty solenoids.

DS C is the solenoid responsible for controlling the engagement of the rear drive.

 

 

I don't mean to pick on 84Sub but

he has a couple of facts not quite correct.

 

VSS 2 is in the dash (speedometer head unit) and is used by the cruise control and

the TECU for deciding when to engage 4wd.

The ECU may also use it's output for some functions

such as when to enact the idle control circuits.

 

The duty solenoids and the 4EAT transmissions

were used in some GL models in

the late eighties.

 

Duty solenoids were also employed on ECU controlled carburetors in the mid eighties.

Sorry, I got the VSS'es backwards, luckily the one in the dash is easier to get at

I know that the VSS is used for timing advance in SPFI cars (info on it in FSM), and I assumed the ECU used it for that too on Legacy's b/c timing can be changed at constant speed for improved economy. (our old Datsun 510 had two sets of breaker points, second set engaged when in 4th (top) gear)
