jamoz
howdy, semi-clueless owner of "86 GL wagon with recurring oil leaks. Great story: bought the wagon 2 years ago from a bud for $400. Had 55,000 miles in '02. my buddy had bought it from an OLD lady in "99 with, get this, 13,0000 miles. Literally to church and the grocery store once a week. She's red and she's beautiful. I've taken her everywhere. she's like a member of the fam. very excited about tapping into this wealth of knowledge. I've never loved an automobile like i do this one. she is the first car i ever paid my own money for and i want her to last forever. anyways, i replaced the radiator, new front axel (cv joint), and few other minor things. she has had a constant oil leak...tried a couple of temp remedies (like disregarding it and feeding her oil like she was from texas), but finally took her to a trusted? mechanic yesterday who said the major leak was from the intake. any thoughts on this? i know suubs are notorious for oil leaks...what to do? the intake? your thoughts are greatly appreciated
s'ko
Welcome to the board. Yes soobs are notorious for leaking. Now for the intake I am not sure what he's talking about. Likely places for oil leaks are 1) Oil Pump seals 2) Front main seal 3) Valve covers 4) Oil Pan 5) Rear main seal The first three you can do w/o removing the engine. Valve cover seals being the easiest. What part of the engine is the oil coming? BW
jamoz
thanks for reply...oil seems to be coming from all directions! oil, oil, everywhere oil! without it in front of me (at the shop now) its hard to say, maybe most from the middle or back of the engine block? could oil leak have anything to do with "intake"? hooziewhatsit
A good thing to have done is a steam clean. That will get all the old oil off the block and let you see where the leaks are. The only oil leak with the intake I can think of has to do with the PCV valve. Do a search for it, and I'm sure you'll find lots about it. It's mostly corrected by cleaning the valve. Also, if it is plugged, I've heard it can make oil come out everywhere.
Snowman
I think hooziewhatsit is on the right track with the PCV system. It's a poor design on these car, and it you don't run a genuine subaru valve and keep it as well as the lines clean, it will suck oil out of the crankcase, which either goes into the intake or leaks out from where the hoses connect. Clean everything off and start looking around. S'ko's list is pretty complete, but it's also possible that on an EA82 (the engine that you've got), the cam-tower to head mating surface is leaking. The oil passage in there is sealed with an O-ring, which can leak profusely if it fails.
