new tranny governor

Featured Replies

Where can I get a new tranny governor for 3AT loyal ? the one I have looks good , but if its not, can I get this at an auto parts place or is it a dealer part?. also. I drained my gear oil. where is the filter for the gear box located? or is there one? the governor had a foul smell from tranny fluid, but I drained the tranny and put new fluid in , why will the "old fliud" smell be evident still? thanks. If you do need one, I have a good used one. Just let me know. Tim

there is wear on the end gear.. there are marks that are 'shiny', how do I know its not good/ how much for the one you have? thanks

Don't worry about "shiny". The usual death of this gear is to "apple coring", where the gear is visibly worn into the shape of a well eaten apple, and the center of the helical teeth are worn compeltely away.

If the gear is reasonably OK, go ahead and disassemble the valve assembly (an internal snap ring removal tool helps) and clean it thoroughly. This valve may look OK, but until you disassemble it you can't really judge how freely it moves... and it needs to move VERY freely. Below is a link to instructions on how to clean the valve.

Good luck!
