All I can think of is ebrake engaged, rear end on jackstands (praying they hold), and some front axle stubs spinning crazy fast

no if the front axle is broken then if you take it out of 4 wheel drive the car wont budge, its like being in neutral and i believe the speedo works of the trans so it doesnt need to be moving to tell the speed of the engine.
