Hi all, I was going to change my fuel filter this weekend, but couldn't find the fuel pump...I know where it was on my '94 Legacy, but now i have a '97 Legacy WGN L 2.2, and figured I'd ask before pulling the floor of my cargo area up all helter skelter.

 

Where/how to access the fuel pump?

Let me start off by saying: Sorry this does not answer your question, but...

 

I changed the filter in my car last fall. I just let the car sit overnight, and the pressure in the fuel system seemed to be released (from my experience all pressure is lost in a matter of hours).

 

I am assuming you want to find the pump so as to release pressure from the fuel system?

 

If you want to disconnect the pump and run the engine to clear the system pressure, I believe there is a connector under the rear seat, or you can pull the fuse. Hope this helps.

BTW: Have a rag handy as there is still fuel in the lines/filter!

Ditto what hklaine said about the fuel pressure. I have a fuel pressure gauge and can attest that all residual pressure is gone after 2-3 hours, sometimes faster.

The fuel pump, if you still want to release pressure, can be accessed thru an opening found under the carpet in the cargo area of a wagon just behind the right rear seat. I think you can disconnect the pump's connector after having removed the floor cover. No need, I think, to open the tank.

I think you'll see this easily if you go there.

Even easier, the relay for the pump is under the dash, it is a round thing. This is the method featured in SFM.

The filter is in the engine bay right next to the driver's side strut tower.

 

Fuel pump is in the tank. The connector to unplug the pump is under the passenger rear seat. There's usually black foam over it. You can unplug this connector, and try and start the car to relieve the pressure, or just leave it sit overnight.

My car went weak on me a month ago and it ended up being the fuel pump. (Thank goodness.) I let it sit overnight, opened the gas cap, and unhooked the fuel filter. No mess at all. (Except when my 8 yr old kicked over the old filter that was sitting on the ground when he came over to "help" work on the Sube.) It was a very simple swap.
