Hi,

I live in a 30F to over 90F environment. Went to the autoshop, and i kinda came out with not what i went in thinking i would get. I'd decided on a 10W40 motor oil and a 75W90 man transaxle oil. But i got a 15W60 Motor and 80W85 transmission. I'm considering taking them back, its what the oil manu recommends, but not what the Subies owners manual recommends.

 

What should i get? It's got a 100,000mile engine in it, not really using oil atm. (20W50) [by the way... its an EA82 with a 5sp FWD tranny]

Re: your motor oil, I had horrible TOD with my Ea82 that had sat for five years but only had 12000 mi on it. It was a newly installed longblock before she sat.

 

I tried everything I could think of as far as flushes and MMO and such, and finally decided to listen to the guys here on board and stuck in a new oil pump.

TOD gone.

 

But she still gently clattered at times with 10w-30. Yesterday, I put in a new Pure One filter, filled her up with Castrol 10-40, and wow, complete silence.

 

So it's 10-40 for us now.

 

I've read it a million times here on the board. Apparently these old Soobs are picky individuals when it comes to engine oil. I don't think theres one best viscosity for them. Seems like we all have to experiment and find out what our engines prefer. At least they're vocal, and tell us what they need, if we pay attention.

 

I do think that 20w-50 is a bit to heavy for those 30 degree mornings, unless you are running Marvel with it.

Try doing a search on oils, and waita week or two for Snowman to finish his college paper on motor oils. Then ask him to e-mail you a copy.
