April 21, 200520 yr BAM. And while driving my girlfriend and I to get gelati. No embarassment, she's used to me spending almost as much time under the hood as driving the thing. Anyway, I had the old Hitachi coil in the back because I knew this might happen someday. Anyway, the coil wire end on the coil side was actually BURNT. Was the absence of an extra ballast resistor the cause? I asked the question if I needed one a while ago but didnt get a straight answer. I'm going to try out an Accel Superstock now (no way am I going run the slothy stock coil, reliable as it may be) so do I need the resistor, and which kind would I need.
May 17, 200520 yr I'm sorry....when you say ballast resistor I'm curious as to which part you are talking about.:-\ I've never seen a resistor on a coil before....but I have seen capacitors (aka condensors). Are we talking about the silver can with a mounting tab that has a wire coming out of it (possibly out of each end)? One wire goes to the coil and if there, the other wire usually goes to the block. Just curious. NV
May 17, 200520 yr The instructions call for an .8 ohm resistor to be used if the Blaster coil is used with a non-MSD points style ignition. Eh?
May 18, 200520 yr I have a Gregories book I says that the 79 - 84 models had ballast resistor. I have read that the resistor is used to privide a voltage drop for a lower impedence coil so that when cranking, when the voltage is less, the voltage drop is less, and the coil recieves a voltage closer to 12v when starting But dont quote me on that:drunk:
May 19, 200520 yr a ballast resistor is the $0.25 part that caused tons of old valiants to not start sometimes.. located on firewall
