My ea81t has had solid lifter put in place of the hydraulic ones (the rest of the valve train for the hydraulic lifters is still there). Checked out dealer price - NZ$513 (US$375) for the set! If thats the cheapest they come, i can see why they were replaced with solid ones.

 

Anyone know if there are any aftermarket units available for the ea81?

Saw a listing for ea82 ones, but none for the ea81....

I quickly checked on of our (USA) parts stores, NAPA, and they want US$40.39 each... or US$323.12 for the set. I could not find the price for solid lifters.

are you sure its just lifters maybe they swapped the cam too.

They may have, but judging by the standard of work that seems to have been performed on the engine previously (rather poor), i doubt it. I will certainly check when i get my hands on a micrometer.

Is the different cam profile used because it has hydraulic lifters or because of the larger valves?

Checked the cam shaft - its a hydraulic lifter one. Will this cause any probs with the solid lifters?

According to Crane cams:

 

It is never advisable to run mechanical lifters on a hydraulic camshaft. Although certain racing applications could benefit from the additional RPM potential of the mechanical lifters (and some racers do so), the ramp design of the hydraulic lobes is not designed for use with valve lash. The harshness (evidenced by the valve train noise) will shorten the life of the camshaft and lifters, and also the rest of the valve train. Never run hydraulic lifters on a mechanical camshaft, as immediate lifter pump-up will occur, leading to a lack of performance, and probable catastrophic engine failure

errrhhh.... sounds like i really should find some hydraulic lifters.

Do the ea81 hla's wear out much?

I would rather pick up an engine with hla's in it than spend $500 for new hla's, but not if they are going to be worn out beyond use.

No one had troubles with ea81 hydraulic lifters?

A good friend of mine had an EA81 he put over 256k MILES before a rebuild that had hydraulic lifters - I don't think he ever had any problems with the lifters, but I have not asked him directly - the reason he had it rebuilt was that he needed new valve seals ... and he went a bit overboard

Any leads on where to find these would be much appreciated. I am willing to buy from anywhere in the world, new or second hand.

Just as long as its cheaper than NZ $513 (US$380)!

Well Ross, you could try a google search for online genuine subaru parts. Its a lot cheaper, but when i went to 1stsubaruparts.com they were going to charge me $185US to ship one part (ASV) to Aus.

Yeah, tried that, it is a bit cheaper, US $313.50 for a set, still pretty steep though.
