'82 GL overheating

Featured Replies

I have an overheating problem with my GL. It only does it at idle rpm, and seems to be related to low oil pressure. My oil pressure is high at startup and then drops as the car warms up. The gage eventually seems to read 0 when idling after warm. Any ideas what the problem might be or how to fix it?? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Are you going by the factory gauge? if so, i wouldn't trust it.

Your overheating prob is most likely caused by your electric cooling fan not turning on. This is usually caused by the thermo switch in your radiator going bad, or it could be wiring or a bad fan motor.

In the owners manuel it mentions that during a idle the oil pressure gauge may read "0". As soon as you rev the motor, the oil pressure gauge should come back to life. That is the best I can paraphraise what it said.

Having said that, I think the two problems are unrelated.

I'd go along with the thermo switch on the fan or the fan is bunk.

Have you jumped power to the fan to see if it still wants to play?

Good Luck,

Glenn
