Crap !!! Broken bolt :{

Featured Replies

crap !

i was putting on my new (used) oil pump

and the head broke off the bolt when i was tightening it up

the end of the broken peice is just flush with the block

do you guys think a screw extractor thing will work ??

or am i going to have to drill and re-tap ??

i'de rather not re-tap if i can :{

but will do what i must !!

thanks in advance for any input

Carefully, locate the center with a punch and drill out about 1/2" deep if you can and open up the hole to about 1/8th inch diameter. Soak the bolt remains with liquidwrench or some such and use an "easy out" to try to unscrew it. Most of the time you can save yourself more work this way. If not, you're most of the way to drilling and re-tapping.

If you broke the bolt installing/tightening the bolt, it shouldn't be too tough to remove. (i.e. - It isn't rust welded to something.) I would locate an extractor set with reverse-twist drill bits (or just the drill bits). When you start drilling as edrach said, it is very likely that the reverse-twist bit will back the broken part right out of the hole. (Do remember to run your drill in reverse, though...)

yay !!!

screw extractor kicks rump roast !!!

thanks for building my confidence :)

screw extractor kicks...

Extractors are all well and good...

... until you break one off. Nothing much left to do then except use a coring bit to cut around the bolt to remove it and the extractor.
