SPFI - How fast?

Just curious how fast anyone has ever gotten their SPFI-powered vehicles to. I know they're not speed demons by any stretch, but the factory speedo goes up to what, 130MPH or something?

I got my wagon to it's record speed of 110 on the speedo today - with slightly larger than stock tires - so maybe 113 actual - if it's accurate. This was down a big hill mind you.

Anybody? Let's hear it. I'll take MPFI and Turbo speeds too!

I've hit 100 in my 84 wagon - 2WD with stock tires. I know it's not SPFI, but I thought I would put it in perspective for you. And that was NOT down a hill - straight and level, flat out. It still had more, but not much.

Cool - Yeah, I can get it to 100 on a flat piece of road no problem, but it's tough to get it much higher than that. I have to really wind 4th gear out and then get a good shift into 5th in order to keep accelerating.

my friends 94 loyale spfi has buried the needle downhill(200km/h) my 87 d/r carb'd goes up to about 145 km/h... definitely not as fast as the spfi...

My SPFI tops out at like 85 with 11.37% speedo difference reading to the slow. SO what like 95 or 100? That is flat and downhill. No matter how hard I push it, it just won't go.

Yeah - there is definitely an aerodynamic issue with these old wagons ;) . I drove around for a while with no grill, no bumper. no fenders - all of the removable sheet metal from the front of the car was gone and I noticed a big difference in top end speed on the highway - WHEN I PUT IT ALL BACK ON...

4th gear seems so promising! I can redline it in 4th on the highway anytime, but as soon as I go for 5th...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\"> :x

SPFI open exhaust, cut out air box, motor with aprox. 50k completely empty(no spare tire or parts) except for girlfriend. 107. the GPS confirmed it, and my speedo said 90. no hills, so i figure it was under its own power. 2 wheel drive and big tires.

Lemme tell ya something.I followed Oobnuker today. His wagon hauls major butt for a lowly SPFI.My turbo wagon was not easily overtaking him at any point.I even lost a little ground but hey I was eating my lunch at 85MPH

I could take that car on a long straight but he seems to have a lot of low end.

Oob,you are the new record holder for maniac with a motor in the back of his wagon.I was thankful there were no sudden stops for deer, asswipes, etc.

Hahahha! Once I was comfortable that the engine was secure - there was no stopping me! I envy the turbo top-end though! I definitely have some good low-end - which is good for me on the back roads in sticksville...

RX -

Buried the needle in it stock, going down a nice hill...

With intercooler...buried it on the same hill, just got there lots quicker :-D

Wagon -

Pre-lift, weber, and big tires, was towed to its fastest speed ever at 105 mph when i was moving to college. (passing someone on I-90, on the same hill as the above events.

WIth the lift and weber, but still on 13's, i got her to go 90 a couple times.

86' turbo wagon, got it to 115 on the flats, it had more to go but i figured with 285k that was good enough for me.

the ole XT6 i had would peg the speedo + some at 145 on the flats..

it was all stock, fwd auto, had my wife (GF at the time) and her brother with me.. at 145 it was pretty pegged tho... anytime i get a new car i always find out its limits, so i know what it can and can't do...

i own a 72' GSR coupe.. it is 1400 twin carbureted, i read some of the replys on here, to my ghast, your 1800's are only hitting 100mp/h and thats with 5speed g/box's, my GSR hits 105mp/h quite easily with only a 4 speed box... i have not modified my engine...

cheers

The fastest that I've been in my Brat is a little over 90 on the speedo, with the big tires and 2.7 in her, that was straight and normal. My 3-door (spfi) I've had up to a little over 90, and that was chasing down a turbo Brat, er trying to chase down, he lost me on an uphill. The 84 turbo on the other hand, pre mods that fastest was 105 (thats stock all the emission, cats and mufflers w/stock boost), post mods (2.5" exhaust, single muffler, total of 4 feet of exhaust, and 12lbs of boost) I hit 122 before backing off, and there was more there. The biggest shocker was I remember reading somewhere that digi dashes stop at like 80 sumping mph, mine kept going up. The fastest that I've ever gone in a soob (was in the passenger seat) was in a 92 5-speed SVX, GPS confirmed 160 somthing mph. The kewl part was it remained a "luxury sedan" through it, everything was smooth. Unlike other cars I've been in at those speed that felt as if they were breaking up (cough85camarocough). Catch ya Laters.

My old turbowagon (RIP) had a nice pull going east up the vantage hill (I90) .. I stopped accellerating at 95 :D this was with the airbox modification and cool night air.

Couple weeks ago I took my '83 wagon to about '84MPH (GPS). Funny, it took a while to get there, and I remember going faster (indicated) than that in the '81 years ago. Of course, the '81 had a shorter 4th, so it got to speed a lot quicker!
