What might happen if you put the right strut on the left hand side.

(Lots of rattling)? especilly when going over curbs.?

I don't really recall on my Subie, but on BMWS the offset is different and the tires can rub the spring perch.

I noticed a stamp on the struts for L, and R but there was no difference in the struts. But I am going to check it out tonight. (opefully) the noise is driving me nuts.

I replaced all of mine last summer. They are different left to right.

So, the ball joints were the noisy part?

Yes balljoints was the problem. The rubber boot was ripped on the ball joint and there was no grease. Ball joint had play and control arm was slapping around as well cause the nut was not tight.
