How do I replace the electrical connectors?

Featured Replies

This is a general question about automotive electronics:

If I have a faulty electrical connector, such as the weather-resistant locking connectors used under the hood, where would I get a replacement?

Are they available at dealers or online stores?

I have a connection that is intermittently failing due to a damaged weather seal, and I want to replace the faulty connector end.

The dealer may only have the whole harness available. I would try cleaning the contacts of the connector and then seal the ends with some silicone. Using some electrical tape around the joint of the connector should keep moisture out and then still be able to seperate the connector when needed.

Two ways around this problem:

- Go to a car junk-yard, find the exact same connector, and cut it out of the old car. Then splice it into your car's wiring (solder connections are best IMHO).

- Go to an electronics store (Radio Shack?) and find a similar connector with the same number of wires. Then splice that in.

Of course, if you think that you'll never to need to disconnect the faulty connector again, then you could just discard it, and make a permanent solder-splice in its place.
