Hey all. As some of you know i picked up a nice little RX on saturday. I drove it home, and now would like to take care of the oil leak. I propped the car up, cleaned off the bottom of the engine real well with engine degreaser and whatnot. Then ran it to find the leak. Sure enough it was comming from inside the timming belt cover.

 

So, from reading around a bit, i can assume this is probably the oil pump seal, right? I still get pleanty of oil pressure, jumps up to 40-45ish when i rev. So i think all i need to do it replace the seal for now.

 

 

This is something i can do while its in the car right? Do i need to remove the timming belt at all? Or can all that stay in-tact? Id really rather not touch that stuff at this point.

 

Also, where can i go for seals? Will anywhere have them? For my toyota i always go straight to the dealer for good ol' oem stuff, but for this subi i think napa will do the trick. Does napa carry this stuff?

Bump. Good question I don't have the answer to. I too have mystery slow oil leaks on a EA82T. Good idea about cleaning the bottom of the engine then running it, sometimes the obvious escapes me.

ok first off, I'd pull the front timing belt covers. This will also require removing the accessory belts and the crank pulley. After you do that, you'll be able to determine where the leak is coming from. A few places to look are the oil pump which you already mentioned, cam seals, and front crank seal, all of which is pretty easy. Now also since its on the oil pan, it could possibly be that as well. Best way is to pull the engine, hands down. Its pretty simple, just unbolt/unhook everything and pull out with a cherry picker. If you have it out, best thing to do would be to replace all of those seals, plus the rear main seal as well just to be on the safe side. If it is the oil pump, cam seals, or front crank seal, you will have to remove the timing belts but no worries. After the first time, its pretty easy!

 

As for the seals, you can go to any major autoparts store to get them. If you have to replace the headgaskets if/when they blow, I would recommend OEM Subaru headgaskets.

when in doubt...go OE SUBARU. you CANNOT beat them.

Otherwise looks like ill be pulling the engine out! Im actually exited though. Pulling my last engien was very satisfying. This subau looks like it will be a pretty easy workspace too, and i am reallly interested in pulling this little ea82t out and having a better looksy at it and really understand it and everything. I would really like to KNOW this engine. I honestly cant wait, lol. (maybe im weird, i duno)
