June 9, 200520 yr Hello everyone. New Subaru owner here. I'm lovin' it. Got an '82 GL for $400 and it only has 73,000 original miles. I think it needs a valve adjustment though. Can anyone tell me for certain when and in what motors they started using the hydraulic lifters?

Hydraulic lifter engines have a boss for a knock sensor, solid lifter engines don't.
June 9, 200520 yr with such low miles the engine should be clean, right? the hydrolic engines had a chrome sticker on both valve covers "do not adjust valve lash" or something like that.. afaik, thats the sure fire way to tell. i bet its solid lifters unless its an auto...
June 9, 200520 yr Hydraulics didn't appear until '83 but only in the auto and turbo models. '85 and later all had hydraulic.
