pull function on windshield doesnt work

Featured Replies

hey guys,

been a long time between posts but school, work, etc etc

the problem i have that just happened is the "pull function" on the windshield handle does not work. before this happened the few times i used it would cause the wipers to move an inch or so, then stop, now nothing happens when i use it unless i put the wipers into the auto modes.

does anyone have a guess??

Can you get the wipers to "sweep once then park" by moving the control from off to low and back to off again right away? If yes, you need a multi-function switch (also known as a "combination switch assembly", turn signal switch assembly)

The wiper switch can be removed as a separate part. If there's no obvious easy fix, it has to be replaced (get one with adjustable delay).

Either that, or you didn't hold it long enough so that the wiper cam deactivates the "park" switch. Try this, pull on the stalk, and hold it until the wipers are 1/4 of the way up and let go. Does it continue on for one sweep and stop? If it does, then just pull and hold for a second before letting go instead of just tapping it.

The same thing happens on my 96 Outback, so the pull and hold for a second sequence always works. :)

All this time I never knew this---I thought the wiper switch was part of the multi-function switch and it couldn't be replaced separately. This is good to know because my wifes '98 Outback has the "fixed delay" switch that doesn't allow adjustment of wipe intervals. So the "adjustable delay" switch can be substituted for the "fixed delay" switch with no modification??

You can swap one switch for the other because they use the same wiring. The p/n for gen. 2 & 1 wagons is 83113AA520.

no matter how long i hold the switch it doesnt move from the parked position, it just seems like it is struggling. and when i do the normal move like you mentioned, the first intermit. works fine along with the rest.

so its a switch that has to be replaced??? looks like another thing that has to be replaced....

Then you're right---the motor is OK---it's the switch that's causing the trouble where the wipers won't sweep when you pull the lever forward. And I learned a few things here also---not only is the wiper switch replaceable separately but you can substitute a switch with "adjustable intermittant timing" for a switch that had "non-adjustable"----thank you avk.

When you mention "looks like another thing that has to be replaced..." just be thankful that Subarus are really quite reliable. When I worked at a Chevrolet dealer for many years, some of those owners were in there with their cars literally every month for one problem or another......
