June 28, 200520 yr Recently, the windows on the driver's side of my '96 Outback Wagon have started occassionally violently shaking as they go up and down. Badly enough that they seem to be scratching the glass. Of course, when I went to take it in to the mechanic, they weren't doing that, and were fine for another week. Then a couple of days ago they started doing it again. At one point, the driver's window went down about 2 inches and then just stopped. (Naturally, this was at a toll both, making things very very convenient.) When the mechanic looked at it, he said he didn't see any problems, but he did apply some lube to it. It seems like it might be related to heat, but I'm not 100% sure. The times I had the problem, we were definitely in the 90s with very high humidity. I can't find any other pattern.
June 28, 200520 yr perhaps the rubber in there is getting sticky? or there's some binding going on... that's all i can thing of? pop open your door and see if something looks wrong.
June 29, 200520 yr If it is shaking, it might be one of the stabilizers that are attached to the glass and then ride along vertical supports in the door. The metal they use on them is a weak metal and can break easily. At first glance, they make look ok. Look close as you run the window up and down. Any cracks/breaks in the metal? Very common problem. I would question the seals since Subarus are frameless windows, they only touch the seal when they are almost closed or just opening. I would put my money on one of the stabilizers. They are what keep the window from shaking and keep them balanced.

Does it seem odd that both windows would do it together on the same day, when neither one had ever done that before? Just coincedence, I guess.
